Module 3 — Roof Soft Wash: Why It’s Soft Wash (Lesson)
This trade is hard work, but it’s not complicated forever. We’re going to keep it simple: protect first, run a repeatable process, and document everything. You don’t need perfect gear on Day 1 — you need good habits and a clear next step. If you’re unsure, you stop, test, and reset expectations before you touch the surface.
What you’re doing today
You’re learning the non-negotiable roof rule and the “why” behind it — so you can explain it to customers and keep yourself out of trouble.
The rule (non‑negotiable)
We do not pressure wash roofs.
That isn’t a preference. It’s a safety and damage-prevention standard.
Why this matters
Roof work is where a small mistake becomes a big bill.
Your job is to control:
- fall risk
- overspray/runoff
- plant stress
- water intrusion
- paint risk (house walls, soffits, trim)
Tools & materials (minimum viable)
- PPE: gloves + eye protection (minimum)
- Hose + working water supply (for rinsing plants and controlling runoff)
- An application method you can control (don’t rely on chaos)
- Proof Pack: phone camera
Optional but recommended:
- low-pressure rinse control (ball valve / gentle rinse)
What the customer is really buying
They’re not buying “bleach.”
They’re buying:
- roof-life protection
- curb appeal
- a clean closeout (photos + communication)
The promise (simple)
Chemistry + dwell + gentle rinse.
No blasting.
Those black roof streaks aren’t “dirt.” They’re usually living growth that feeds off humidity and shade patterns. Your job is to kill it safely, rinse clean, and leave the roof intact.
Decision points (foreman rules)
-
If a roof isn’t safe to walk:
- don’t walk it. Use a no-walk approach.
-
If wind is pushing toward plants/windows:
- slow down and build a protection plan first.
-
If you’re unsure about paint/coatings nearby:
- test first. Overspray/runoff can still create paint problems.
Common mistakes + fixes
-
Mistake: “It’s faster if I just blast it.”
- Fix: roof damage is not worth speed.
-
Mistake: treating plant protection as optional
- Fix: plants get protected before chemical goes down.
-
Mistake: skipping proof
- Fix: proof is part of the product.
What good looks like
- Customer can repeat back the process in one sentence.
- Plants look the same after the job as before.
- Roof looks even (no blast marks).
- Proof Pack is complete.
How to prove it (Proof Pack)
Minimum shots:
- front elevation before/after
- worst area close-up before/after
- gutters/downspouts where runoff matters
Add notes:
- roof type
- any limitations
Do this next (assignment)
- Practice the 20-second roof explanation out loud.
- List 3 roof hazards you’ll check before any application.
