Module 8 — Specialty: Rust Stain Removal SOP (Lesson)
Rust removal is a high-value upsell, but it introduces one of the highest safety risks in our business: Acid.
Whether you are dealing with irrigation rust on a sidewalk or battery acid stains on a driveway, this SOP dictates exactly how to treat the stain, protect the surrounding property, and most importantly, protect yourself.
Required PPE (Non-Negotiable)
Before opening any acid container, you must have the following equipped. Acid fumes can permanently damage your lungs and eyes.
- 3M Splash-Proof Safety Goggles (Do not use standard safety glasses; they must seal against your face).
- Chemical-Resistant Nitrile Gloves (Gauntlet style preferred).
- 3M Half-Face Respirator equipped with Organic Vapor/Acid Gas Cartridges.
The Chemistry: What We Use
We utilize two primary products depending on the severity of the rust and the surface. Do not put acid in your soft wash system—apply it using a dedicated Viton-sealed Chemical Pump Sprayer.
1. Oxalic Acid (Dry Form)
Oxalic Acid Crystals are cheap, stable, and highly effective for standard rust stains.
- Dilution: Mix 1 to 2 cups of dry oxalic acid with 1 gallon of warm water.
- Paste: For vertical or stubborn spots, mix a 3:1 ratio (powder to water) to create a paste that won't run.
2. Acid Magic (Liquid)
Acid Magic is a buffered muriatic acid alternative. It emits 90% fewer fumes and won't immediately burn intact skin, but it remains a highly aggressive acid.
- Dilution: Start with a 1:4 ratio (1 part Acid Magic to 4 parts water). Remember the golden rule: Always add acid to water, never water to acid.
Application & Dwell Time
- Pre-wet everything. Saturate all surrounding vegetation, grass, and adjoining concrete. Acid will flash-dry on a dry surface and cause permanent etching.
- Evenly apply your acid solution using your pump sprayer.
- Allow it to dwell for 5 to 10 minutes.
- Never let it dry. Keep it misted with water or reapply the solution if needed.
- Assess the stain. If it hasn't lifted, increase the chemical ratio and reapply.
Rinse and Neutralize
Rinsing is not enough. You must neutralize the acid to stop the chemical reaction.
Keep a Chemical-Resistant Spray Bottle filled with acid neutralizer on your truck at all times.
- Neutralizer Recipe: Mix ½ cup of Baking Soda with 1 quart of water.
If acid splashes on grass, metal, or unintended surfaces, immediately spray it with neutralizer and flush it heavily with a garden hose.
Clean Up & Disposal
To discard leftover acid solution, pour baking soda into the bucket until it stops bubbling. You can use 0-14 pH Test Strips to verify the pH is above 7.0. Once neutralized into a harmless salt, dispose of it safely away from drains or pets.
⚠️ CRITICAL WARNING: Never mix acid with bleach (sodium hypochlorite). Doing so creates toxic chlorine gas which can be fatal.
