Module 8 — Specialty: Electrostatic Gutter Brightening (Tiger Stripe Removal) (Lesson)

Hey Operator,

One of the fastest ways to lose money—or ruin a customer's expectations—on a standard house wash is not explaining the difference between organic mildew and electrostatic gutter oxidation ("tiger stripes"). Standard house-wash bleach (1%–1.5% SH) kills green/black algae on gutters, but it will not remove vertical black electrostatic runoff lines bonded to the baked-on aluminum enamel. That requires Gutter Brightening—sold as a dedicated specialty upgrade.

1. The Science of "Tiger Stripes" (Why Bleach Doesn't Touch Them)

• Vertical black streaks on white aluminum K-style gutters are composed of asphalt shingle petroleum leachates, atmospheric carbon soot, and oxidized aluminum particles electrostatically bonded to the factory polyester/acrylic paint film.
• Breaking that electrostatic bond requires a butyl/alkaline surfactant degreaser (LA's Totally Awesome Concentrated Degreaser or dedicated gutter brightener) applied with soft mechanical brush agitation via an Ettore Wrap-Around Flow Brush on an Ettore 16-Foot Extension Pole or Gardiner Water-Fed Pole.

2. Critical Failure Mode: Stripping Baked Enamel Paint

• Never Let Brightener Dry on Hot Florida Aluminum: If butyl degreaser flashes dry on sun-baked gutters (90°F+), or is mixed too hot, it will strip the white factory paint down to bare gray aluminum—or drip down and burn streaks into dark exterior house paint below.
• Work in 10-Foot Sections: Pre-wet the gutter face and the siding/plants below, scrub a 10-foot section with diluted brightener on your soft brush, and immediately flush with high-volume fresh water (General Pump RB35 Wash Down Gun) before moving to the next section.
